  • 2016 - Price range: €32.50 - €5,410.98
    Zcash launched its mainnet on October 28, introducing ZEC and shielded transactions. The price moved extremely wildly in the first trading period: after peaking above €5,400, it fell to about €32.50 in December. By the end of the year, ZEC was around €45.76, 99.2% lower than at the peak.
  • 2017 - Price range: €24.76 - €626.91
    ZEC started the year around €45.70 and first dropped to about €24.76. After that, the price climbed sharply and reached nearly €627 in December, before ZEC ended the year around €421.19. In May, the company behind Zcash announced a partnership with JPMorgan to use the privacy technology in Quorum. That brought institutional attention to the technology, but it did not mean JPMorgan would use ZEC as a payment method.
  • 2018 - Price range: €43.02 - €794.20
    ZEC started the year around €423.26 and briefly rose to nearly €794 in January. After that came a long decline, with a short rebound in the spring. In May, Gemini got approval to trade and custody Zcash in New York. Later that year, the Sapling upgrade made shielded payments more practical because they needed less time and memory. The broad crypto sell-off in November lined up with another drop; ZEC ended the year around €49.20, about 88.4% lower than at the start.
  • 2019 - Price range: €23.07 - €109.16
    ZEC started the year around €49.11 and rose to about €109 in June. After that, the price fell for months, down to around €23.07 in November, and ended the year around €24.62. In February, the Zcash team announced that an earlier discovered vulnerability, which could have made it possible to counterfeit tokens, had already been fixed. In December, the Blossom upgrade changed the network: blocks became available faster, which allowed transactions to be confirmed more quickly.
  • 2020 - Price range: €16.94 - €85.95
    ZEC started the year around €24.62, rose quickly in January, and fell to about €16.94 during the broad market sell-off in March. After that, the price recovered and climbed to nearly €85.95 in August. In November, the reward for new blocks was cut in half for the first time. At the same time, a new fund for Zcash development was launched, which also changed how the ecosystem was funded. ZEC ended the year around €52.38, about 112.7% higher than at the start.
  • 2021 - Price range: €45.13 - €306.65
    ZEC started the year around €52.38 and rose to about €306.65 in May. On May 19, the broader crypto market turned sharply, with heavy selling and lots of forced liquidations of leveraged positions. ZEC then pulled back further and ended the year around €128.86: 58% lower than at the peak, but still 146% higher than at the start of the year. Access to ZEC also changed in 2021: South Korean crypto exchanges removed the token, while Bittrex later resumed trading.
  • 2022 - Price range: €34.11 - €193.16
    ZEC started the year around €128.88 and rose to about €193.16 in March. After that, the price dropped sharply. In May, TerraUSD lost its peg to the dollar and the Terra ecosystem collapsed, which hit the crypto market hard. That same month, Zcash introduced NU5, a new shielded transaction system and Unified Addresses, which made it easier for wallets to use different types of addresses. The collapse of FTX in November caused fresh broad market turmoil. ZEC ended the year around €34.82, about 73% lower than at the start.
  • 2023 - Price range: €20.99 - €47.84
    ZEC started the year around €34.81 and rose to nearly €47.84 in February. After that, the price gradually fell, hitting a low around €20.99 in August. Later, ZEC recovered somewhat and ended the year around €25.21, 27.6% lower than at the start. In August, the Zcash Foundation and ECC announced that the core protocol would from then on be developed mainly with Zebra, a new software version for running a full Zcash node. The existing software would still be supported during the transition.
  • 2024 - Price range: €15.02 - €75.60
    ZEC started the year around €25.21 and fell in the first half of the year. In July, the price dropped to about €15.02, after which a strong recovery followed. At the start of 2024, U.S. spot bitcoin investment products launched on the stock market, an important step for regulated access to bitcoin. That year, Zcash also got its own mobile crypto wallet: Zashi made shielded payments easier for users to access. In November, the reward for new blocks was cut in half again, and NU6 split part of it between community grants and a fund for future development. ZEC ended the year around €54.25, about 115.2% higher than at the start.
  • 2025 - Price range: €23.98 - €643.36
    ZEC started the year around €54.25 and fell to about €23.98 in February. After that, the price moved up in waves, with a strong rise in the fall. In November, ZEC reached about €643.36 and ended the year around €435.54, 702.8% higher than at the start. Zashi added features to swap ZEC and make payments with other supported cryptos, without recipients needing to accept Zcash. With NU6.1, ZEC holders also got a role in distributing part of the funds for ecosystem development.
  • Q1 2026 - Price range: €156.84 - €456.42
    ZEC started the quarter around €435.53 and dropped sharply in January and early February. After a low around €156.84, it recovered, but the price stayed well below the level from the start of January and ended March around €214.74. At the start of January, the entire ECC team resigned after a conflict over governance and continued at a new development company. The news came alongside a sell-off in ZEC. Later that month, the Zcash Foundation announced that the SEC had closed its investigation and did not plan to recommend enforcement action against the organization.
  • Q2 2026 - Price range: €200.80 - €592.47
    ZEC started April around €214.54 and first climbed above €300. In May, the rise accelerated: the price moved up to about €592.47. After that, it pulled back and ended the quarter around €349.44, still 62.9% higher than at the start. At the end of May, developers found a serious vulnerability in Orchard, the system for shielded transactions. In theory, this could have allowed extra ZEC to be created without being noticed. For that reason, Orchard was temporarily shut down on June 2. A day later, Zcash activated NU6.2, which fixed the bug and made shielded transactions possible again.
  • Q3 2026 - Price range: €338.07 - €1,484.55
    ZEC started July around €349.43 and moved up and down during the month. In August, the price kept rising, and in September the increase sped up sharply: the price reached about €1,484.55. After that, it pulled back to around €1,269.48 at the end of September. Over the quarter, ZEC rose by about 263.3%. In July, the old node software Zcashd stopped supporting further network activity. On July 28, Zcash then activated Ironwood, an upgrade that introduced a new pool for shielded transactions. At the same time, the existing Orchard pool was limited so that any ZEC created through the previously discovered vulnerability could not be moved into the new system without control.
  • Q4 2026 - Price range: €993.80 - €1,280.08
    In the first days of October, ZEC fell from around €1,269.30 to about €993.80 on October 8. The price recovered the next day to around €1,080.65, still 14.9% lower than on October 1. At the start of October, a test version of Zebra for NU7 was released. This version is meant to test the upgrade on testnet; NU7 has not yet been activated on mainnet.

Upcoming Technical Updates


  • NU7 - Expected in November 2026 - The planned NU7 upgrade is expected to cut the time between new blocks from 75 to 25 seconds, so transactions are expected to confirm faster. A portion of transaction fees is also expected to be set aside for future miner rewards. Activation is currently planned for November 5, depending on the review of test results and a final decision on October 20. Holders of old Sprout balances need to move them before the upgrade if they want to keep spending them normally.
