Additional Information about Flare (FLR)

What is Flare (FLR)?

Flare is a Layer 1-blockchain specifically built for applications that need reliable external data. The network is EVM-compatible, allowing developers to use existing Ethereum tools and smart contracts on Flare.

An important goal of Flare is to make assets from other blockchains usable within DeFi. To do this, the network developed FAssets. These are tokenized versions of assets from blockchains that have little or no smart contract functionality themselves. FXRP is, for example, a version of XRP that can be used on Flare in DeFi applications.

Flare also has built-in protocols for external data. The Flare Time Series Oracle provides price data, among other things, while the Flare Data Connector can verify whether events on other blockchains have actually taken place.

The network therefore mainly focuses on developers, DeFi protocols and users who want to use assets and data from different blockchains in on-chain applications.

How does Flare (FLR) work?

Flare combines EVM-compatible smart contracts with built-in protocols for external data. Two important components are the Flare Time Series Oracle, or FTSO, and the Flare Data Connector, or FDC.

The FTSO provides decentralized price and time series data to applications on Flare. The FDC verifies events and data from outside Flare, for example whether a certain transaction on the XRP Ledger, Bitcoin or another supported blockchain has actually taken place. Validators on Flare, in addition to securing the blockchain, also play a role in these data protocols.

FAssets use this infrastructure to make assets from other blockchains available on Flare. One example is FXRP, a tokenized version of XRP. FAssets are overcollateralized, so there is enough collateral backing the issued tokens. This allows assets such as XRP to be used within DeFi and smart contracts on Flare.

Flare Smart Accounts make this easier for XRP users. An XRP address can be linked to a smart account on Flare. This allows a user to perform actions on Flare from an XRPL wallet, such as minting FXRP, without having to constantly switch between different wallets and interfaces themselves.

Flare has its own Layer 1 and uses Snowman++ as consensus mechanism. This protocol works with Proof of Stake. Validators stake FLR, process transactions and vote on blocks. Snowman++ is used on both the P-Chain and the EVM-compatible C-Chain.

FLR is the native token of Flare. The token is used for transaction fees, staking and governance. FLR holders can also delegate their voting weight to FTSO data providers and receive rewards for doing so. Transaction fees on the network are burned.

Who are the founders of Flare?

Flare was founded by Hugo Philion, Sean Rowan and Dr. Naïri Usher. The team began researching and developing the technology behind the network in 2017 and later formally founded the company behind Flare.

Hugo Philion is co-founder and CEO of Flare. Before Flare, he worked in the financial sector and studied machine learning at University College London, where he met his later co-founders.

Sean Rowan is a co-founder of Flare and has a technical background in engineering and machine learning. From the beginning, he was involved in developing the network's consensus and interoperability technology.

Dr. Naïri Usher is also a co-founder and has an academic background in quantum computing and machine learning. Together with Rowan, she wrote an early version of the Flare Consensus Protocol in 2019.

The Flare mainnet eventually launched on 14 July 2022. The public distribution of FLR followed on 9 January 2023.
