Loopring operates by creating a global order book that aggregates liquidity from various sources, including both centralized and decentralized exchanges. The protocol utilizes a concept called "ring-matching" to enable users to trade directly with each other without the need for a centralized intermediary. When a user wants to make a trade, Loopring allows them to submit their order to the network. Instead of executing the trade immediately, the order is processed off-chain, where it can be matched with other compatible orders. This off-chain order management significantly improves the scalability and speed of the exchange. Once a set of orders is matched, Loopring generates a cryptographic proof called a "ring signature," which proves that the orders can be settled without any inconsistencies or double-spending. This ring signature is then submitted to the Ethereum blockchain for settlement, ensuring the finality and immutability of the trade. By settling trades on-chain, Loopring leverages the security and decentralization of the Ethereum network while avoiding the high transaction costs and latency associated with fully on-chain exchanges. Loopring also introduces a unique feature called "zkRollup," which combines zero-knowledge proofs with layer-two scaling solutions. This enables Loopring to batch multiple trades together and submit them as a single transaction to the Ethereum blockchain, reducing gas fees and increasing throughput. Furthermore, Loopring employs decentralized custody solutions, allowing users to retain control of their funds throughout the trading process.
