What Is ZetaChain (ZETA)?

ZetaChain is a Layer-1 blockchain built to help different blockchains and AI models work together. A Layer-1 is a standalone blockchain network. The goal is to let apps work directly with multiple chains, like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.

ZetaChain also aims to make cross-chain actions simpler. Cross-chain means something can work across different blockchains. The network wants to make that possible without first wrapping or moving tokens. The ZETA token is used for transaction fees, validator staking, and governance within the network. Governance means token holders can vote on decisions inside the network.

How Does ZetaChain (ZETA) Work?

ZetaChain combines the Cosmos SDK with an EVM-compatible layer. The Cosmos SDK is a building kit for blockchains. EVM-compatible means developers can use familiar Ethereum tools. At the same time, the network can also process data and assets from other chains.

The platform also includes an AI Portal. This part routes requests to different AI model providers. It also has a Private Memory Layer, which is encrypted context controlled by the user. Apps can remember that information and use it in later interactions.

ZetaChain is built as a Proof-of-Stake Layer-1 with an EVM-compatible execution layer. That means Solidity-smart contracts can run, along with support for real assets from other chains. Validators in the network help coordinate between blockchains and support external assets.

The consensus model is based on Proof of Stake and an engine similar to Tendermint/Comet BFT. Validators create blocks, verify transactions, and track cross-chain events. They have to stake ZETA to secure the network. In return for participating, they can earn rewards, but they can also be penalized for bad behavior. ZETA is also used to pay gas for transactions and cross-chain calls, and to vote in governance.

Who Founded ZetaChain?

ZetaChain was founded in 2021 by Ankur Nandwani and a team of experienced blockchain developers.

Nandwani previously worked at Coinbase, Brave, and 0x. He was also involved in the development of Basic Attention Token (BAT). Other early contributors to ZetaChain include Panruo Wu and Brandon Truong, but the project mainly describes them as core contributors rather than clear founders.

The team started ZetaChain to let different blockchains work together directly. That way, developers can build apps that use data and assets across multiple networks without having to create a separate solution for every blockchain.
