What is Hyperliquid (HYPE)?

Hyperliquid is a decentralized exchange (DEX) that operates on its own Layer-1 blockchain. The platform was launched in 2023 and is a fast and scalable solution for trading crypto derivatives such as perpetual futures. The platform aims to offer users a trading experience comparable to centralized platforms, but in a decentralized way, without the involvement of a third party.

What makes Hyperliquid unique is that it runs on its own Layer-1 blockchain (the base layer of a blockchain). This means it does not depend on another blockchain, but instead has full control over transaction validation and has built its own infrastructure.

How does Hyperliquid work?

Hyperliquid operates as a DEX with its own Layer-1 blockchain and uses an on-chain order book to process transactions quickly and efficiently. Instead of relying on Automated Market Makers (AMMs), Hyperliquid uses a traditional order book model. This makes it similar to a traditional centralized platform, but orders are executed and processed in a decentralized way without the involvement of a third party.

The network uses its own consensus mechanism called HyperBFT. This is a Proof-of-Stake (PoS)-based system inspired by Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT). Validators stake tokens to validate transactions and produce new blocks within the Hyperliquid network. Within this system, validators reach consensus on the order of transactions, even if some participants act maliciously or incorrectly.

HyperBFT is optimized for speed and efficiency. Unlike traditional Proof-of-Work networks, where blocks are mined using computational power, HyperBFT relies on a smaller number of validators that reach consensus quickly. As a result, transactions can be confirmed almost instantly, with low latency (the time between sending and processing a transaction) ranging from a few milliseconds to under a second. According to the technical documentation and design goals of Hyperliquid , the network can process tens of thousands of orders per second under optimal conditions.

An important advantage of HyperBFT is fast finality: once a transaction is confirmed, it is immediately final and cannot be reversed. This is especially important for trading, where speed and certainty are crucial.

When users place an order, it is immediately added to the order book and matched with other orders. This happens entirely on-chain, making all transactions transparent and verifiable.

Who are the founders of Hyperliquid (HYPE)?

Hyperliquid was developed by Jeff Yan, together with a team of experienced engineers and traders. Development of the blockchain and DEX began in 2022, and the platform was launched in 2023. The HYPE token was later introduced in 2024 via an airdrop. The goal of Hyperliquid is to build a decentralized trading platform that can compete with centralized exchanges in terms of speed, cost, and functionality, while maintaining decentralization, including transparency and self-custody.

What is the HYPE token?

The HYPE token is the native token of the Hyperliquid ecosystem.
