What is SOON ?

SOON is a blockchain project designed to bring the high-performance execution technology associated with Solana to Ethereum and other blockchain networks. The project describes itself as an SVM rollup, meaning that it uses the Solana Virtual Machine, or SVM, to process transactions while relying on another blockchain for settlement and security.

The ecosystem consists of three main components:

  • SOON Mainnet: a general-purpose Layer 2 network that uses Ethereum as its settlement layer.
  • SOON Stack: infrastructure that developers can use to launch their own SVM-based Layer 2 networks.
  • InterSOON : a cross-chain communication protocol that connects SOON Mainnet, networks created with the SOON Stack, and other blockchains.

Together, these components are intended to make blockchain applications faster, more scalable, and easier to use across different networks.

A central part of the project is its Decoupled SVM architecture. On Solana, the SVM execution environment is closely connected to the network’s consensus system. SOON separates the SVM execution layer from the underlying settlement and consensus layers. This allows the SVM to be used as the transaction-processing engine of a Layer 2 network without requiring the network to copy the entire Solana architecture.

Simply put, the technology behind SOON is designed to provide:

  • Fast and parallel transaction processing
  • Lower transaction costs
  • Compatibility with Solana-based programs and development tools
  • Settlement and security provided by established Layer 1 networks
  • Infrastructure for launching customized SVM-based blockchains

SOON Mainnet currently operates as a Layer 2 network on Ethereum. Transactions are processed in the SVM-based execution environment before transaction information and network updates are ultimately settled through Ethereum. This combination is intended to offer the speed and efficiency of the SVM while benefiting from Ethereum’s security guarantees.

The SOON token is the native utility and governance token of the ecosystem. It is designed to support activities across SOON Mainnet and other networks created using the SOON Stack. Holders can participate in governance decisions concerning protocol upgrades, treasury management, ecosystem development, grants, and reward distribution.

The token is also used to incentivize developers and other contributors who create applications, infrastructure, and tools for the ecosystem. The project initially created one billion SOON tokens and introduced annual token inflation of 3%. Following a community governance proposal, the SOON Foundation burned 30 million tokens.

How does SOON (SOON) work?

SOON combines several technologies to process transactions efficiently while connecting its activity to larger Layer 1 blockchains. Its main network uses Ethereum for settlement but processes transactions through a version of the Solana Virtual Machine.

The Solana Virtual Machine is the execution environment responsible for running transactions and blockchain programs. One of its main characteristics is parallel execution. Instead of processing every transaction one after another, the SVM can process multiple independent transactions at the same time. This can increase network capacity and reduce delays when many users are active.

When someone submits a transaction to SOON Mainnet, the transaction contains one or more instructions. These instructions tell the network which program should be executed and which accounts or assets should be updated. The process generally works as follows:

  • A user creates and signs a transaction.
  • The transaction is submitted to the SOON network.
  • The SVM execution layer processes the transaction.
  • Valid transactions are grouped into a rollup batch.
  • The transaction data is made available for verification.
  • The resulting network state is connected to Ethereum for settlement.

This allows users to receive fast transaction confirmations on the Layer 2 network while the rollup architecture links the network’s security to Ethereum.

A key feature of this process is the Decoupled SVM. The execution environment has been separated from Solana’s original consensus system. As a result, SOON can use the SVM to execute transactions while relying on Ethereum or another supported Layer 1 network for settlement.

This separation also gives developers greater flexibility. They can use an SVM-based execution environment without needing to build directly on Solana. Networks created with the SOON Stack can select different settlement and data availability solutions depending on their technical requirements.

Another important part of the architecture is merklization. Blockchain networks use cryptographic structures to summarize and verify their current state. SOON introduced state-root and proof mechanisms into its SVM architecture so that changes made by the execution layer can be verified by other parts of the rollup system. This helps the network prove that transactions and account updates have been processed correctly.

The project also uses horizontal scaling. Instead of depending only on increasingly powerful individual machines, horizontal scaling makes it possible to distribute transaction-processing work across additional infrastructure. This is intended to help the network support more activity as demand increases.

The wider ecosystem is connected through InterSOON . This cross-chain messaging system allows information and assets to move between SOON Mainnet, networks built with the SOON Stack, and external blockchain networks. Its underlying messaging infrastructure is supported by Hyperlane.

Within this ecosystem, the SOON token has several functions:

  • Token holders can participate in governance.
  • Developers and contributors can receive tokens as ecosystem incentives.
  • The token supports activity across SOON Mainnet and SOON Chains.
  • The project plans to use staked tokens as part of a validator-based fast-finality mechanism.

Under the proposed staking model, validators would stake SOON tokens to help secure the network and would receive rewards for participating. The official documentation describes this fast-finality settlement mechanism as a planned part of the network’s development.

Who are the founders of SOON ?

SOON was co-founded by Joanna Zeng and Andrew Zhou. Development of the project began in June 2024, with the team launching its public development network in September 2024. The Alpha Mainnet followed on January 3, 2025.

Joanna Zeng

Joanna Zeng is the co-founder of SOON and was introduced as the project’s CEO. Before founding the project, she worked in the crypto industry in business development and partnership roles.

According to the project, Zeng had been active in the crypto sector since 2017 and previously led business development and partnerships at Coinbase, Optimism, and Aleo. Her experience across Ethereum-based networks and alternative virtual machines helped shape the idea behind SOON .

Zeng believed that blockchain infrastructure still presented too many barriers to widespread adoption. After observing the performance of the Solana ecosystem and the SVM, she concluded that SVM technology could also be useful outside Solana itself. This became one of the main ideas behind SOON : separating the SVM from its original consensus system and making it available to developers across different blockchain ecosystems.

Andrew Zhou

Andrew Zhou is the technical co-founder of SOON and was introduced as its CTO. He has experience developing smart contracts and Layer 1 blockchain networks, as well as working with the Rust and Go programming languages.

Zhou played an important role in designing the project’s Decoupled SVM architecture. This included adapting the SVM so that it could function as the execution layer of a rollup while operating separately from Solana’s original consensus mechanism.

The project stated that Zhou had five years of experience with Rust and six years of experience with Go when SOON was introduced. These programming languages are widely used for building blockchain infrastructure and other high-performance software systems.

Together, Zeng and Zhou created SOON to combine the performance of the Solana Virtual Machine with the flexibility and security of modular Layer 2 infrastructure. Rather than building another independent Layer 1 blockchain, the founders focused on making the SVM available as an execution environment on Ethereum and other networks.

Their broader goal is to give developers access to fast, parallel transaction processing without requiring them to leave their preferred blockchain ecosystem. Through SOON Mainnet, the SOON Stack, and InterSOON , the project aims to create a connected ecosystem of SVM-based networks and applications.
